About Us

Home to outstanding musicians from across the University of London, our Jazz Society Big Band and Small Band gig regularly arrived Student Central and further afield.

The University of London Jazz Society comprises a non-auditioned Big Band (ULBB) and Small Band, allowing London's best musicians to play in a laid-back, collaborative setting.

What we do

We provide jazz musicians with a fantastic opportunity to play in a high-quality ensemble. Rehearsing every week in term time we play a range of big band music: swing, latin, funk, as well as arrangements and showpieces. This band performs at least once a term, including yearly performances at the LSE's AU Ball.

Since 2018, the Jazz Society also runs weekly small band rehearsals. These are less formal, and provide opportunities for players and singers to explore a broader range of music, anywhere from Louis Armstrong to Gnarles Barkley. This year, we are starting regular "Jazz Jams" under the leadership of vocalist Sheida Kiran.

When and Where We Meet

We meet at 6.30pm on Monday nights in the Upper Hall, on the third floor of Student Central (Malet Street, WC1E 7HY). Bring an instrument and have a play!

Who are the instructors?

The Big Band is directed by Will Banks, a trumpeter, pianist and vocalist from Nottingham. Will was awarded a Student Central Laurel in 2019 for his contributions to the Big Band, and creates polished and exciting performances through relaxed but focused rehearsals.

The Jazz Society is also lucky to regularly work with Pete Long of Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, who brings a lifetime of high-profile professional experience to the band. Famous for his sharp wit and no-nonsense approach to teaching, Pete is a long-standing favourite with musicians and audiences alike.

Opportunities

Apart from gigging regularly at Student Central, the society offers a wealth of social activities, including weekly drinks, and regular trips to Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club.

What Does It Cost?

Membership of the University of London Jazz Society costs just £20, which covers all rehearsals, gigs, and access to musical equipment upon request.
