Welcome to

Jazz

Do you play a jazz instrument and want to play in a sociable, high-quality Big Band? Do you enjoy regular gigging, love performing, and also enjoy a friendly and sociable atmosphere? Looks like the Jazz Society's Big Band is for you!

What we do

We provide jazz musicians with a fantastic opportunity to play in a high-quality ensemble. Rehearsing every week in term time we play a range of big band music: swing, latin, funk, as well as arrangements and showpieces. Also, meeting a range of talented musicians in the band offers the opportunity for strong networking, smaller ensembles and greater things! We are a non-auditioned Big Band who rehearse weekly (see below), and also frequently organise small band gigs around the city.

When and Where We Meet

We meet at 6.30pm on Monday nights in the Upper Hall, on the third floor of Student Central (Malet Street, WC1E 7HY). Bring an instrument and have a play!

Who are the instructors?

We often draft in Pete Long as our guest Musical Director, who with his vast experience in the big band and music industry always boosts the quality (and volume) of the band. He always gets the band giggling and is a valuable coach for our sessions.

Mark Armstrong, musical director of NYJO, has also coached the band on occasion and has similarly squeezed the potential out of a room of student musicians to great effect.

Opportunities

Other than regular gigs around the capital, we always try and arrange social meetings, gig visits, and in the past have visited the Montreux Jazz Festival, Gibraltar Festival, Edinburgh, and Malta on Big Band Tours!

What Does It Cost?

This year's joining fee will be £10 for a whole year of musical joy.
