The RLSS UK National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) including AED is the most awarded lifeguard qualification in the United Kingdom and Ireland and is also internationally recognised. The NPLQ is an excellent starting point for anyone looking for a career in the leisure industry.

Student Central is an accredited NPLQ centre and runs a 5 day course that is open to its students and members of the public. Training is split between our recently refurbished conference rooms and the largest swimming pool in central London, we are located on Malet Street, London, WC1E 7HY.

Costs 

We do not offer the student discount to those studying in further education only degree level students qualify.

This cost includes all course materials, examination and your certificate from the RLSS.  We also offer the optional Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) bolt on with this course which you can sign up for at a cost of £20 during your training.

Signing Up

  1. Ensure you have registered with Student Central and that you have received and opened your account activation email (please check your junk mail). 
  2. Log in to the website and select one of the course dates listed below, from there you can add a ticket to your basket and proceed to the checkout. 
  3. Complete the candidate booking form and make a secure payment online. All successful bookings will receive a confirmation email.

Prerequisites 

Candidates must be at least 16 and must be capable of the following before taking part in the course.

  • Jump/dive into deep water
  • Swim 50m in less than 1 minute
  • Swim 100m continuously on the front then on the back (total 200m)
  • Tread water in deep water for more than 30 seconds
  • Climb out of the pool unaided, without using the steps or a ladder

Approved Prior Learning

In some circumstances, candidates may be able to show evidence of prior achievement to exempt themselves from sections of the course. Exemptions may apply to holders of the following awards and qualifications (guided learning time credits are shown in brackets).

  • Current RLSS UK National Beach Lifeguard Qualification (NBLQ) [12 hours]
  • Current HSE Approved First Aid at Work Certificate or Occupational First Aid Certificate [9 hours]
  • Current STA NARS [PL] Qualification [9 hours]

Where candidates wish to claim a training exemption, they must provide the course trainer with original qualifications prior to the start of the course. A maximum of 12 hours accreditation for prior learning may be claimed.

NPLQ Validity Overseas

If you currently hold a valid NPLQ and you are seeking work as a lifeguard outside of the UK then you can apply for an international certificate with IQL.

Funding Support

The NPLQ is currently approved for funding based on your individual circumstances. Student Central does not offer any financial support, please direct your enquiries to one of the institutions listed below.

The NPLQ is registered with Ofqual and may be referred to by some organisations as the IQL Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding, Intervention, Supervision and Rescue (QCF) LAD reference number 600/7437/1.
